Esta conmemoración fue establecida el 2 de abril de 1974 mediante el decreto No. 4476 por orden del entonces presidente Joaquín Balaguer.
El locutor se define como una persona encargada de hablar para dar noticias, avisos o anuncios, presentar programas, realizar entrevistas, comentarios en vivo y todo lo concerniente a la comunicación en una emisión de radio o televisión.
¿Por qué se celebra el 18 de abril?
El Día del Locutor se celebra anualmente cada 18 de abril debido a que en esa fecha, pero de 1938, el Departamento de Comunicaciones del Gobierno llevó a cabo el primer examen oficial para aspirantes a locutores con el fin de regularizar la radiodifusión nacional.
Desde entonces, en el país se comenzó a considerar al locutor como un profesional de la palabra hablada.
